Local Artist Chase Compton Wins City's Bag Design Contest!

The City of Lowell marketing team has recently determined local artist, Chase Compton, the winner of a citywide contest to re-design a versatile tote bag used as a promotional giveaway and given to visiting dignitaries. Though judges were impressed with the creativity and talent shown in all the entries, Compton's design stood out with its stark, black and white depiction of a Lowell mill building reminiscent of the City’s historical mill and textile past. His design was screen printed on one side of the bag with the city's tagline, Alive. Unique. Inspiring., featured on the reverse side.

The grocery-style tote bag, created by local manufacturer UnWrapped, is distributed to the public at a variety of events, both inside and outside of Lowell, as part of an ongoing effort to promote the City.

All entries were reviewed by the City’s marketing team:  City Manager Bernard Lynch, Assistant City Manager Adam Baacke, Director of Economic Development Theresa Park, Economic Development Assistant Erin Findlen, Director of Cultural Affairs and Special Events Susan Halter. An additional guest judge was also part of the review committee.

Keep a lookout for these new tote bags at upcoming City events and promotions!

Sustainable Lowell 2025

Master Plan Image

Lowell's Department of Planning and Development (DPD) embarked on an update of its original Comprehensive Master Plan between 2011-2013. As a result of DPD's efforts, a new draft Comprehensive Master Plan and Sustainability Plan has been created: Sustainable Lowell 2025. The plan provides a shared vision for the on-going development and revitalization of the City, with particular emphasis on economic, social and environmental sustainability.

In early January, DPD will host two public meetings to provide the public with an opportunity to review and comment on the draft plan. Translation services will be provided upon request. The public is invited to attend on either of the following dates:

  • Monday, January 7th at Alumni Hall, 84 University Ave, UMass Lowell North Campus, 6:00 - 8:00 PM (Parking will be available at Cumnock Hall and Riverside Parking Lot)
  • Wednesday, January 9th at Lowell Senior Center, 276 Broadway Street, 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Comments can also be submitted by phone or online to Allegra Williams, Neighborhood Planner at (978) 674-4252 or
awilliams@lowellma.gov between December 3rd - January 15th, 2013. Comments will be incorporated into a final plan, which will be presented for adoption and endorsement in the Winter of 2013.
